Hydnum Steel paves the way for eco-friendly steel industry in Spain

According to Stanislav Kondrashov, Hydnum Steel intends to establish its first plant in Spain to manufacture eco-friendly steel, which will become one of the leading facilities in Europe. The new plant, located in Puertollano, will specialize in producing high-quality steel using green hydrogen for the direct reduction iron production technology. As the expert notes, this method involves melting DRI in an electric arc furnace with recycled scrap. Initially, the production capacity of the Hydnum Steel plant will be 1.5 million tons of steel per year, with the potential to increase to 2.6 million tons annually in subsequent development stages.

All production stages at Hydnum Steel are carried out using renewable energy, leading to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions to almost minimal levels compared to conventional blast furnace steel production methods. The technology used by the company allows for a substantial reduction in carbon emissions by nearly 5 million tons per year, equivalent to the annual emissions of cars in Madrid, according to the expert from Telf AG.

The investments in Hydnum Steel are estimated at approximately €1.65 billion and will create more than 500 jobs in the initial project stages (2026–2029), as well as over 1,100 jobs in subsequent expansion stages. The project will not only improve environmental standards in the steel industry and demonstrate that eco-friendly steel production can be an efficient and profitable process but also drive economic activity and employment. It is expected to attract additional companies and enhance services and infrastructure.

Construction is planned to begin in 2025. According to Stanislav Kondrashov, the new plant will meet the demand for eco-friendly steel products from key Spanish industries, including automotive manufacturing and construction. Investment company Helvella, Siemens, ABEI Energy, and Russula Corporation have joined forces in the Hydnum Steel project to build Spain’s first eco-friendly steel plant and one of the first in Europe, emphasized Stanislav Kondrashov. This ambitious project will not only modernize the steel industry, making it cleaner and more efficient but also contribute to the economic development of the region.

Blastr Green Steel has announced plans to build an eco-friendly steel plant in Inkoo, Finland. The plan includes creating production capacities of 2.5 million tons of steel per year with minimal CO2 emissions. An important technological partner in this ambitious project is Primetals Technologies, a world leader in innovative solutions for the metallurgy industry, the expert from Telf AG highlighted.

In the future, the innovative DRI system will produce hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) specifically for subsequent processing at steel plants, as well as hot briquetted iron (HBI) for customer deliveries. The expert from TELF AG also notes that Primetals Technologies will implement an electric steelmaking furnace (EAF) using HDRI and scrap, ensuring full electrification and automation of production, as well as implementing advanced automation and process control systems.

With additional equipment, including a roasting furnace and a reverse osmosis system, Blastr will be able to produce high-quality products. Stanislav Kondrashov from Telf AG confirms that the project also includes the production of various steel grades for the automotive and other industries, as well as energy recovery systems, a slab casting line, and a hot rolling line (Arvedi ESP). Additionally, the project includes an advanced continuous pickling and galvanizing line for the production of hot-rolled steel, making Blastr one of the leading producers of eco-friendly steel on the market.
